  • Emacs: Load additional dot files

Not the prettiest of code snippets but works for me. Before I put my emacs dot file on github, I was sharing snippets of it to people in the office. Unfortunately it was full of random configs of half played with packages, configs with odd “quirks” or just plain personal data.

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 11

Just a quick 20 mile spin in the sun with a tailwind. A nice morning to knock out the final miles to, rather than fighting the gloom and crazy crosswinds of yesterday. Ended up passing a couple who we were talking to on the train to Inverness later on in the week.

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 10

Last long day and it started off well. Porridge, full breakfast and a clean drive train (what more can you ask for). First half of the day was a scorcher, with a high of 31C (Think this may have been the hotest day on record in the UK). A strong tail wind helped to drive us forward at a great clip. We did stop for a section at a Hotel in the middle of nowhere....

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 9

Beautiful sunshine put a smile on both our faces. Away went the arm/leg warmers, gilet and overshoes. Out came the suntan lotion and sunglasses. Hoping on the bike we were welcomed with a gentle tailwind, buttery smooth roads and a ever so slight downward slope to the road for the first 5-10miles. A great way to start the day after the 125mile pain of yesterday, until the Garmin locked up. It took 4 power cycles...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 8

So we had basically stayed in the automated premier inn of the north. Keycards grabbed from the pub at the other end of the car park. Luckily they let us lock up the bikes in the laundry room (quite a worry navigating dirty bikes around piles of white linen). Anyway, breakfast started with a cloying Lidl mayonnaise (with a hint of pasta) meal. Fun start to the day, which was always planned as the longest....

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 7

Have to put a bit more effort into writing up this day, since I had given up at the time and just written bullet points under the categories of: “good”, “meh”. However, that did summarise the feel of the day. Definitely a day which felt like it was never going to end.

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 6

Another early start, with the plan to get food on the way. Which we did… eventually. Ended up climbing up Kendall’s pass (hard work on an empty stomach), pass at least one 16% sign (defaced to: 116%. Nice!). The downhill on the other side was entirely worth the climb. Utterly amazing! Especially noteworthy since it was our first proper downhill of the ride (and thankfully not our last). Several 20% sections and lots of low...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 5

Decided to sack off the B&B’s late, and separately priced breakfast, and make an early start. Best decision ever! Felt good to stretch the legs and also good to be treated with respect by drivers on the main roads. Nice change from yesterday’s 5 mile gauntlet. Today was our planned “painful” day. From looking at the maps, it was either 1 day of main roads & towns, or 2 days of dodging said roads &...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 4

Today I was both mentally & physically destroyed (funny, since in the run up to this adventure I was expecting to be this bad on day 3). Started feeling like a dead weight up to the first cafe stop. By this point James was also struggling, since we were hunting for a break for about 10miles. Randomly we met a real cool old boy who had lived the adventurers life (motor bike touring, MTB, canoe...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 3

Day 3 was my expected: “make it or break it” day. Legs started achy, but that melted after a few miles. For the first time in the trip we managed to keep a good schedule of eating every 2hrs/20miles or so. The first stop was White Swan just before Cheddar Gorge. Great back bacon sandwich, with crackling rind, result! Later on was an okay tuna Mayo baguette at the Black Horse way before the bridge....

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 2

Bright start with an outlook to be baking hot all day. It took a few miles to get the legs going and shake out the aches from the first day of riding. Unfortunately James got puncture number 2 within the first 10-15miles (I can’t remember if puncture number 1 was on Day 1 or Day 2). I patched the old tube, whilst James replaced it for a spare. The rear tyre looked to be in...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 1

First “proper” day of riding and was thankful that we had grabbed the Lands End photos yesterday whilst it was sunny. A wet start with the mist giving visibility to about 20-30m. This and occasional rain meant that much of the morning was spent in arm/leg warmers & gilet. Quite a good combination which I felt comfortable in (Although I was cursing my laziness for not washing the arm/leg warmers in waterproofing solution to build...

  • LEJOG 2015 - Day 0

The initial day was mostly filled with trying to get to the starting point. Packed the bike in the car and last minute fretting over the kit, before driving from Cardiff to my mates place in Taunton. After a quick lunch we headed off for a long 4hour train ride to Penzance. A quick change into bibs in a disabled toilet before riding in the last of the evening sunshine from Penzance station to Lands...
